Kinematics and compliance testing are essential in automotive and motorsport for understanding the motion and flexibility of mechanical components under load, such as suspension and chassis.
Kinematics testing: Measures the movement of components, including displacement, velocity, acceleration and rotation, often under controlled conditions. This is crucial in applications such as automotive suspension systems.
Compliance testing: Assesses how structures deform under force, determining flexibility, stiffness and mechanical response. This is critical for evaluating structural integrity, fatigue resistance and performance optimisation.
In Kinematics and Compliance (K&C) testing, measurements focus on a vehicle’s suspension and steering response to simulated road conditions, including wheel position, wheel force and compliance under various loads.
Using a non-contact solution offers several benefits to this type of testing. Firstly, with no contact made to the vehicle, the response measured is not affected by the contacting sensors. Secondly, the setup becomes quicker and simpler without the need to mount physical sensors. And finally, it reduces the complexity of the test rig, reducing wear and the need for repaired or replacement sensors.
To monitor the motion of each wheel of the vehicle, we use our Axiom video measurement heads. With a measurement head positioned at each wheel, the full motion can be remotely measured. This provides full six degrees of freedom (6DoF) information. The data from this is captured directly in the control system operating the test. Providing synchronous measurements with the test inputs.
When the requirements is to test the whole vehicle, Mobius, our 3D non-contact measurement heads can be used. With their large field of view, the entire vehicle will be visible. Then by combining together multiple Mobius measurement heads in the same system, the entire vehicles response can be measured. This allows for not only the individual wheel and suspension motion to be measured but also multiple points over the whole vehicle. This could be points on the chassis to understand torsion.
The non-contact video-based measurements are critical for this type of system. Aiding with no impact on the results by removing the traditional contacting sensors such as encoders, accelerometers or strain gauges. It further helps with data processing. By capturing the video from the test, future analysis can be conducted on previously captured tests by simply reprocessing the video.
Imetrum’s Digital Image Correlation software, Video Gauge, uses point tracking algorithms, incorporating a range of mathematical functions for analysing the behaviour of the component under test.
AxiomKC’s enhanced features are the culmination of many years of development in Imetrum’s three-dimensional displacement measurement capability. This, in combination with class leading accuracy and resolution, means it offers the most data rich output of any comparable 3D Digital Image Correlation system.
The AxiomKC system supports full integration of its testing capability into any test control system. A control system can easily be configured for remote control of AxiomKC testing via universally available TCP communication. This integration delivers a suite of simple commands which allow for automation and streamlining of the test process.
This enables timed synchronisation of data acquisition in line with inputs from the test control system. During testing, live measurement data can be streamed over network protocols and automatically integrated, displayed and stored alongside other data sources. This seamless connectivity delivers simple and efficient kinematics and compliance testing, empowering users to get the most out of every run.
AxiomKC can be added retrospectively to existing test rigs. Replace your existing contracting sensors with non-contact, video-based systems to experience the benefits of faster setup times, more accurate results and the ability to reanalyse captured tests.
Imetrum provides fully tailored AxiomKC solutions, customising factors such as measurement volume, light wavelength and installation process. This ensures that each system meets the precise requirements of the application.
